Michael Bell is a Senior Advisor to the Trade Compliance Group and an independent UK-based export controls consultant. Michael is a member of the Export Group for Aerospace and Defence (EGAD), the Executive Committee, and the Export Control Organisation's Export Control Advisory Committee (ECAC). As such, he plays a leading role in helping to represent the interests of UK industry in issues such as UK export control reform, ITAR reform, the Arms Trade Treaty, and the US/UK Defence Trade Cooperation Treaty.
Michael earned his degree in philosophy and ancient history at Magdalen College Oxford. From 1964 to 1965, Michael was a Research Associate of the Institute for Strategic Studies in London. In 1965 he joined the Ministry of Defence, holding a number of posts over the following 30 years. In 1986 to 1988, he was assigned to NATO as Assistant Secretary General for Defence Planning and Policy. Michael's final appointment was as Deputy Under Secretary of State for Defence Procurement (retitled Deputy Chief of Defence Procurement Support) from 1992 - 1996.
In April 1999 Michael joined British Aerospace (now BAE Systems) after 2 years on secondment. From 2004-2012, Michael was Group Export Controls Consultant for BAE Systems plc. Michael was made Companion of the Bath (CB) in 1992.
